What is a Disposable Night Nappies?

Disposable night nappies, also known as overnight diapers, are designed to keep babies dry for longer periods of time. They are made with extra-absorbent materials and can prevent any kind of mess or leakage at night. Disposable diapers can help to avoid skin allergies and rashes and also get a good night's sleep.

Advantages of Disposable Night Nappies

Bamboo baby Diaper

Less Mess

Disposable diapers have a very strong absorbent lining that can absorb wetness up to almost 5 to 6 times your baby pees. These diapers are designed in a way that makes them absorb the maximum amount of wetness, yet create the least amount of mess.

Keeps Baby Dry and Safe

Disposable diapers can absorb wetness and grow to almost 5 times their own weight, yet keep your baby dry. The lining that is placed in the centre often contains gel components that are guaranteed to absorb the wetness and keep the surface dry for almost 5 to 6 hours. Wet or moist skin encourages bacteria to feed and is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, virus and other germs. When your baby wears a diaper, the sensitive area remains dry and thus the growth of bacteria and other germs is prevented.

Easy to Use

If you have ever tried making a young baby or toddler wear a cloth nappy, you can understand how difficult it is to have your baby sit still while you place the nappy underneath. After that, you also have to make sure that the nappy is placed properly and your baby is still, so that you can tie it up properly. With a disposable diaper, you can simply wrap it around your baby, even if your baby is standing up, and secure it at the sides with the Velcro straps. Of course you can also use the pant style diapers, which are super popular due to their ease of use. All you have to do is make your baby wear them as if you are putting on a pair of pants, and that is it.

Uninterrupted Sleep

When your baby sleeps in a nappy at night, you will have to constantly wake up and check for any signs of wetness. Not only will this disturb your sleep, your baby will also wake up each time, and you may have to do the entire bedtime routine all over again. Wearing a diaper at night will ensure that your baby feels nice and dry and can get uninterrupted sleep.

Benefits of Using Disposable Night Nappies

1. You Don't Have to Clean Them

Disposable is exactly that, disposable. When you come to change your baby's bum you can simply throw away the used, dirty one and replace it with a clean one. This process has been reported to be over a minute quicker per change, and as any new or experienced parents will know, that's a lot of time when it comes to babies!

2. They are Compact and Easy to Carry Around

Packing your changing bag in a neat and tidy way whilst also being easy to navigate it is a huge task when you have a baby. There is just so much you might need and don't want to leave behind. Have easy to pack and compact nappies that you can fold or squash can really save you a lot of space.

3. Can be Bought Almost Anywhere, Even Petrol Stations

Since the 1960's you've been able to buy disposable nappies in almost all shops that you would expect to sell nappies. Nowadays they are almost a must-have item for any convenience store, supermarket, petrol station, or pharmacy. This means that they are very easy to acquire if you have an emergency or run out unexpectedly.

4. No Need to Flush Poo Down the Toilet

With reusable nappies, when you change them, the nappy can't just be folded up and thrown away. Second, to that, you don't want to be putting a nappy filled with poo straight into the washing machine. This means that you need some form of disposal for the contents of the nappy, with the most ideal being emptying the poo straight down the toilet. A process that can be tricky when you have a baby on the changing mat. Children have a habit of grabbing and pulling things so leaving the filled nappy whilst you change can be a risky move.

What to Look for When Choosing a Disposable Night Nappies?

modular-1

Chlorine Free

Chlorine is often used to bleach the paper liners and wood pulp in nappies. This process can leave traces of a toxic chemical called Dioxin in the nappy as well as releasing it into the environment during the bleaching process in manufacturing. Dioxins are carcinogens and are linked to many health problems.

modular-2

Fragrance Free

Fragrances are frequently used in nappies to block odour. They often have endocrine disrupting phthalates in them which are linked to a whole host of negative health effects. These are unnecessary nappy ingredients as you should change a nappy frequently anyway. Nappies with fragrance should definitely be avoided.

care diaper

Phthalate Free and Lotion Free

Phthalates can also hide in lotions which can be used on the inner layer of the nappy. Either look for a nappy without lotion or make sure that they are phthalate free.

How to Choose the Correct Diaper Size

Look at the Weight Suggestion
When you're checking out the diaper selection online or in the store, look at the weight suggestion listed on the diaper box. This will give you an idea of which size to choose. Just keep in mind that babies can weigh the same but have very different body types or shapes, meaning they might wear different diaper sizes. But, for your first diaper purchase, referring to the weight recommendations is a great place to start.

Consider Blowouts
Once you've been diapering your baby for a while, taking blowouts into consideration can help you decide if you need to size up or down. All babies will have the occasional blowout (there's no way around it!), but frequent blowouts could mean the diaper is too big or too small. How so? A diaper that's too small doesn't offer enough room for the poop, and a diaper that's too big may leave gaps.

Check for Red Marks
If you find red marks in the diaper area near your baby's belly, legs, or back, it's probably time to put your growing little one in a bigger diaper. First, try loosening the diaper tabs. But if the red marks persist, size up.

What is Inside Those Disposable Diapers?

Inner Layer or Top Sheet
This layer sits next to your baby's skin and is, therefore, the front line on any toxicity or materials risk issue. This material is key. We believe you should require your diaper provider to disclose what their inner layer is (we found that many of them don't).

Absorbent Core
This layer absorbs fluids, but when your baby repositions, fluid can be squeezed out of the core and back onto baby's skin. This liquid can be potentially contaminated by the core materials and is no longer just baby waste. To enhance absorbency, all of the diapers we tested includes a matrix of fluff material and chemical crystals, known as Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP), to soak up and trap fluid (more on this below). The role of the fluff, usually made from wood pulp and may also include wheat/corn-based materials, is to distribute the fluid across the diaper surface, while the SAP is intended to absorb and lock liquids in the core and away from the baby. The bulk of the diaper is composed of the core materials. We consider this the 2nd most important element to understand.

Waterproof Outer Shell
All disposable diapers include a waterproof material for the diaper's outer shell. This layer is most often a petroleum-based plastic or plastic-treated material. Some green diaper companies use a plant-based plastic (aka bioplastic) to provide the waterproof coating, which you may see referred to as PLA or polylactic acid in their ingredients.

Should I Use Cloth Nappies or Disposable Nappies?

When it comes to choosing the right nappies for your baby, there's no denying that the choices available can feel somewhat daunting. One of the most popular debates by parents is whether disposable nappies are better than cloth nappies and vice-versa. Both types have their pros and cons, and the decision you make should be an informed one that also meets your lifestyle needs. With that in mind, here's what you need to know about cloth nappies and disposable nappies:

What are Disposable Nappies?
Disposable nappies are undoubtedly the first choice for many parents of babies and toddlers. They first came into use in the mid-20th century. Today, they have become the default option for many parents in much of the world. All disposable nappies are made with a plastic outer layer and contain an inner layer manufactured with super-absorbent chemicals embedded in it. They're typically available in all supermarkets, chemists, and retail stores that sell baby products.
●Advantages: One of the main draws of disposable nappies is how they're available to buy in a range of different sizes and styles. What's more, disposable nappies are often available to buy under supermarket own-brand labels, resulting in some cost savings to parents. Another advantage is disposable nappies get sold in packs, ensuring an ample supply for most situations. Newborn babies usually need up to 12 nappies a day and up to eight for older babies and toddlers.
●Disadvantages: Perhaps the most significant disadvantage of disposable nappies is the fact they are disposable. There is no way of recycling disposable nappies, so they all end up going to landfill sites. Over 200 billion disposable nappies end up in Australian landfill sites each year. Plus, a disposable nappy takes up to 500 years to break down. While it is possible to buy biodegradable disposable nappies, the rate they decompose will depend on landfill conditions.

What are Cloth Nappies?
Before the advent of disposable nappies, parents used cloth nappies on their babies and toddlers. Cloth nappies, as the name suggests, are nappies made from cloth. Most cloth nappies get manufactured from cotton, but alternatives are available like hemp or bamboo. Despite the popularity of disposable nappies, more parents are switching to cloth nappies for several reasons. Cloth nappies are available in several types, such as "terry" squares, pre-folded, fitted, and pocket styles, along with "all-in-one" types.
●Advantages: There are many benefits cloth nappies. For example, the primary advantage of cloth diapers is how they are reusable and don't contribute to landfill waste as severely as disposable nappies. Cloth nappies are available in different styles and sizes, the same as disposable nappies. Plus, they represent significant cost savings compared to disposables because of the fact they are reusable.
●Disadvantages: If you're new to cloth nappies, one disadvantage you'll notice is how you may not quickly change nappies as you do with disposable nappies. However, preparing cloth nappies in advance can help reduce the steps needed when changing your baby's nappies. Another disadvantage is you need to wash and dry used nappies, meaning you'll factor into your costs the electricity, water, and washing detergent you use. Thankfully, those costs are minimal. Also, some types of cloth nappies may make dressing your child more challenging.

Which Type Should You Choose?
If you're a new parent, it makes sense to start with disposable nappies so you can get to grips with how to put them on your baby and take them off. You might also consider using disposable nappies if you're travelling somewhere far from home and don't have any washing facilities at your destination or during your journey. Otherwise, it makes sense to transition to cloth nappies because the benefits of using them geberally outweigh those of disposable nappies.

Common Problems of Disposable Night Nappies

Q: What are night nappies?

A: A regular day-time nappy is unlikely to cut it. Most families find that they need a specific night time solution to ensure they don't experience leaks by the morning. Night time nappies are typically made from natural fibres for maximum absorbency, and contain lots of layers.

Q: What is a disposable nappy?

A: A disposable nappy (=one that is meant to be used once and thrown away)Disposable nappies are harmful to the environment. a cloth nappy (=one made of cloth, that you can wash and use again)New cloth nappies are easily washable.

Q: What are overnight diapers for?

A: Overnight diapers are designed to keep your baby dry for longer periods of time. While they frequently look the same as regular daytime diapers, these diapers are built with extra-absorbent materials and leak guards so your little one will be able to last the entire night without a diaper change.

Q: What is the purpose of disposable diapers?

A: The main purpose of wearing a disposable diaper is to absorb the moisture of the baby's excretions so that the baby does not become immediately fussy and does not wake up due to the dampness. Many people misunderstand that the use of disposable diaper causes diaper rash or irritation.

Q: Are disposable nappies safe?

A: Some parents find certain brands leak or do not fit their baby well, so you might need to shop around. The cost of disposable nappies adds up over time . Disposable nappies might contain harsh chemicals and an absorbent ingredient (sodium polyacrylate) that can cause nappy rashes.

Q: Is it OK to use disposable diapers?

A: Studies show that disposables may reduce diaper rash, compared with cloth diapers. In the past, some ingredients used to make disposable diapers raised health concerns. But at this point, such ingredients have largely been replaced with safer materials.

Q: Is it safe to use diaper at night?

A: Not changing a diaper at night means that both you and the baby can get uninterrupted sleep at night. However, it also means that the baby's skin will be in contact with urine all night long and cause diaper rash. The diaper rash causes the skin on the baby's bottom to become red, itchy, and painful.

Q: How long do disposable nappies last?

A: That said, diapers are a paper product, so there is an unknown period of time in which they should be used. The rule of thumb is to use diapers within two years of purchase, as they do lose effectiveness over time once they are a couple of years old.

A: Overnight diapers are designed to keep your baby dry for longer periods of time. While they frequently look the same as regular daytime diapers, these diapers are built with extra-absorbent materials and leak guards so your little one will be able to last the entire night without a diaper change.

Q: What makes night time diapers different?

A: Overnight diapers are designed to be far more absorbent. In fact, most overnight options promise to keep baby dry for up to 12 hours, and absorb 20 to 25 percent more liquid than their daytime counterparts. Of course, no diaper is fail-proof-but designs with a super-absorbent core can limit leaks.

Q: What are the functions of disposable diapers?

A: The main purpose of wearing a disposable diaper is to absorb the moisture of the baby's excretions so that the baby does not become immediately fussy and does not wake up due to the dampness. Many people misunderstand that the use of disposable diaper causes diaper rash or irritation.

Q: What are the uses of disposable diapers?

A: The materials used in disposable diapers do a good job of removing moisture from around your baby's skin. Diaper rash happens if your baby's skin stays wet for too long. In most cases, disposable diapers help keep your baby dry better than reusable diapers and reduce the development of skin rashes.

Q: What is the chemistry behind disposable diapers?

A: Whether it is made for a baby or an astronaut, the major disposable diaper brands all contain a powdery chemical absorbent called sodium polyacrylate, which can absorb over 300 times its weight in water!

Q: How many hours do overnight diapers last?

A: Created with extra absorbency, overnight diapers can keep your little one dry for up to 12 hours.

Q: Are overnight diapers okay for daytime?

A: Overnight diapers have more Super Absorbent Polymer, (SAP) than regular diapers to help absorb the increase in urine that comes with a full night's sleep. While not specifically labeled as "overnights," a few brands work well at any hour of the day.

Q: Are disposable nappies eco friendly?

A: No disposable nappies are really biodegradable in landfill conditions. Especially not added to the rubbish inside a large binbag which is how most household waste goes into bins. If you're worried about waste, you should definitely consider reusable nappies as an alternative.

Q: 1How long do disposable nappies last?

A: That said, diapers are a paper product, so there is an unknown period of time in which they should be used. The rule of thumb is to use diapers within two years of purchase, as they do lose effectiveness over time once they are a couple of years old.

Q: How absorbent are disposable diapers?

A: Sodium polyacrylate is an amazing water absorber-it can absorb 200 to 300 times its weight in tap water (even more if the water is distilled) and hold it in a gooey gel.

Q: Do disposable nappies leak?

A: A disposable nappy holds a lot (as does a good cloth nappy) but once the maximum capacity is reached and the chemical gels inside are full the next wee will leak out.

Q: Are disposable diapers synthetic?

A: A disposable diaper is made of wood pulp and synthetic materials. The absorbent core is commonly made from wood pulp and sodium polyacrylate, with an inner layer of polypropylene (and possibly fragrances).
